Long before becoming 'FDJ', the National Lottery was created in 1933 to help the mutilated World War I 'Gueules cassées'. It operated on a simple principle of redistribution of bets: while a portion of the bets went to the winners, the other was redistributed to a fund dedicated to veterans.
